In MMA shouldn't the fighters pull back when one fighter is completely out? Gonzaga fight is an example?

Sooner or later someone is going to get killed in MMA. I think it is going to come from when a knocked out opponent gets drilled while he is down. Not to single out Gonzaga but this is a typical type scenario. Crocop was gone out to lunch, he was in lala land after he was Kicked. Gonzaga didn't even have to bother with any further punches because it was obvious he was out. Still Gonzaga tried to land more punches but the ref did a good job of stopping him. Now if the ref slipped or was slow getting there Gonzaga could have landed more blows. Shouldn't a fighter have the presence of mind to realize it is over. I know some fighters do.

What is your opinion when a fighter keeps attacking an out opponent?|||Great question. Rashad Evans' last fight is another good example - he really did hurt his opponent with the extra punches after the high kick knocked him out. Everyone yells at the refs if they stop a fight too early, so often I think they end up waiting too long and letting the fighter land too many extra punches (although I think the ref did fine in the Crocop fight).

I have knocked people out in sparring a few times, and I always knew immediately that the fight was over, so I don't think it would be hard for professional fighters to show some restraint when their opponent is clearly unconscious!|||i have been watching the ufc for some yrs now. the only thing i can say in there defense is that sometimes it appears that you knock a guy out and he snaps out of it. these fighters are taught to keep fighting until the fight is stopped. it would be pretty crappy if someone thought they knocked someone out and didnt and then get drilled hiself. so i think that its not because they want to kill the guy they just are trying to make sure the fight is stopped. thats why it is so important for the ref to be paying attention and really in the fight. great question.|||This should be looked at on a case by case basis.

Sometimes it is hard to tell if your opponent is knocked out or just slow to move.

It would be a shame if you had your opponent "on the ropes" and backed off because you thought they were done only to have them hit you with a surprise blow.

of course it would be a much bigger shame to lose a fighter in such a trivial manner as a late hit.

I have watched UFC for a long time and I can't recall any situations where the fighting continued in a malicious manner. Generally, I think the ref's do a very good job of controlling the fights.

I do not wish to see a death or even a serious injury but statistically it is bound to happen. Every sport has freak incidents that result in these mishaps.|||The fighters are not trying to kill each other, they are aught to keep fighting until they are told to stop. I have been watching MMA for a number of years and while there are times the fighter is out and takes a few extra shots, the ref usually gets there quick enough before any damage can be done. In the early years it was much different and guys would take many many extra shots but the official are amazing now and recognize when to stop a fight in an instant. The fighters have to keep going because there are also times where holding up because you think a guy is out allows him to snap back into it and then the fighter can not finish it off. Gonzaga probably didnt realize Cro Cop was out and wasnt going to let up because he didnt wanna lose to such a dangerous guy. These guys are told to go until they are told to stop and that is what they do, I do not think any of them would intentionally keep going knowing someone is out, they arent going to want to be that guy that kills someone.|||You bring up a valid point BUT any real fighter that's ever laced them up %26amp; stepped into a ring for a sanctioned fight %26amp; not a back alley rumble will tell you that you ALWAYS, ALWAYS, ALWAYS keep going until the ref stops you! For all anyone knew that could've been a flash knock down %26amp; CroCop could've bounced right back up before anyone realized he just got knocked down.

Perfect example, Pete "Drago" Sell vs. Nate "The Rock" Quarry. Nate Quarry dropped Drago and bounced right on top of him %26amp; before Drago could even defend himself the ref Cecil Peoples jumped on top of Nate %26amp; stopped the fight. You have to remember that cause everyone was saying how awkward it looked for Peoples to be laying on top of Nate laying on top of Drago with Drago screaming %26amp; yelling WTF are you doing! Nick %26amp; Matt Serra had to restrain Drago from going after the ref. The crowd was booing, even Nate knew Drago just got screwed by bad reffereeing and kept his comments short %26amp; quick yet at the same time had the nerve to say it was a good fight. Of course what comes around goes around cause Nate's next fight was that KO punch on the jaw gift wrapped, sealed, %26amp; delivered by Rich Franklin and back injury or not, even if it is legit, Nate hasn't fought since then.

That's why fighters keep going after someone gets knocked down.|||I think it's on the refs since it's well known that you gotta keep going till the fight is called. It's obvious a lot of the time that a guy is out or unable to better his situation long before a ref usually calls it. I think some of the refs are good about it but there are a bunch that let it go longer than it needs to. Cro Cop looked dead, that was sucha crazy knockout. I thought he totally dislocated his knee too it looked completely out. I was more amazed that he was walking on his own and without a limp than i was with that insane kick.|||These fighters are trained to fight until the ref tells them to stop. I once saw a fighter stop early and the ref gave him this look like "What the **** are you doing?" The fighter then went to follow up and the ref stopped the fight immediately. The fact is that sometimes someone will get KO'd and then wake up as soon as they hit the mat, and if the ref isn't paying attention, they could continue the fight, so fighters are trained to pound until "the ref pulls you off".

Even if somebody is hurt, if you back off or let your guard down in any way, you could get caught. Just look at the Pete Sell fight from the TUF4 Finale. He had his opponent really hurt, then came in to finish the fight like he had already won, and got caught on the chin and KO'd. If fighters let down their guards every time they rocked an opponent, there would be a lot more crazy finishes in the UFC.|||I think it's like football. You got to keep on going until the whistle blows. What if you think they're out and they're just stunned? They could recover and maybe even win. The ref has a job to do that has no room for slips and errors! I remember a fight on like ufc 2 when one guy kicks another in the face and the guy went down. Now the agressor was sure it was over and he went off celebrating only to hear that the fight was not over. He still went on to win but thats not the point. The point is you just never know.|||the referees need to stop a fight when it is over but to correct you on one thing no one has been seriously injured in MMA|||i have been watching the ufc for some yrs now. the only thing i can say in there defense is that sometimes it appears that you knock a guy out and he snaps out of it. these fighters are taught to keep fighting until the fight is stopped. it would be pretty crappy if someone thought they knocked someone out and didnt and then get drilled hiself. so i think that its not because they want to kill the guy they just are trying to make sure the fight is stopped. thats why it is so important for the ref to be paying attention and really in the fight. great question.
