Knocking sound in 2001 Mitsubishi Eclipse when in idle?

The car is a standard and it makes a knocking sound when not in a any gear. Also, the sound disappears completely when I push down the clutch.|||sounds like it might be the pressure plate...|||my guess is the throwout bearing in the clutch.

it probably makes the same noise when you're in gear with the clutch out (engaged) but you don't hear it because you're moving, road noise, etc.|||sounds like the clutch is rattling which could mean will need replacing shortly. or it could be the release bearing either way I suggest the clutch kit be replaced.|||CHECK YOUR OIL!!!!!!|||When the clutch is depressed, it pulls the crankshaft back. If the main bearings are worn excessively, the movement of the crankshaft will help silence them. Also, remove the spark plug wires, one at a time, while idling. If the noise goes away, it's a rod bearing. This will tell you what cylinder to expect. Be sure the oil pressure is up and the engine has oil in it.

Also check the bolts around the bell housing and trans. for looseness. The throwout bearing could be the problem or the flywheel bolts may be loose.
