How to slow down my puppy during meal time?

I have had my puppy for a couple months and since I've had him I've constantly worked on bad behavior at mealtime, correcting each one, but it seems I've come to a point where I'm stumped. First, he wouldnt wait for the bowl to be completely down, often knocking it out of my hand before I could put it down. I was able to correct it and now he sits and waits. Then he would finish his food, and then run over to my 2-yr old Pom's bowl and start eating his. I was able to correct this. Now, he eats his meal in 2.5 seconds flat, causing guests to ask me when the last time I fed him was. I get scared he going to choke or experience bloat. What can I do to slow down his eating?|||We have 2 puppies with similar problems and have taken a different route with each one. This advice is from our vet and seems to work great.

Our youngest puppy we just feed smaller amounts several times a day. We actually started off by giving him part of his food then waiting about 15 minutes or so then giving him the rest. Now we feed him every 3 hours. Easy to do because I'm home.

Our older puppy eats outside and the vet said to put a HEAVY chain in his food dish. He will have to work harder to get his food and this will slow him down. We chose that route for him when we had to go away for a couple weeks and the neighbor couldn't feed him several times a day. Sounds weird I know, but it worked.

We had to train our puppies to sit and wait for their food too. I know how you feel. Good luck.|||At the pet store there is a thing called a Kong ball. It's basically a red plastic ball a little larger than a tennis ball. You put peanut butter or a dog biscuit or dry food in it, then the puppy or dog has to use ingenuety to extract the food. It's not for feeding as less than a handfull fits in it but it might be worth a try.|||use one of those angel food cake makers they have a dip in them and they will bump their nose causing them to think twice when pushing head in quickly worked for my lil puppy|||An easy way to fix this is to put a bowl, ball, or another object inside his bowl. Without room to really scarf it down, he will be forced to eat slower and in smaller portions.|||Alrighty,

A lot of dogs have this problem. There are a couple things you could try.

First off, you could try putting the bowl down with a couple pieces of food. When he eats it, put some more in, and do this for the rest of the meal. Its gonna take some time, but hopefully it'll work.

Secondly, they sell bowls with dividers that are suppose to help, but are pricey. Its easier to get a big rock, can't be swallow able, and place it in the dish. Put half of the meal in and then let him eat it. In this case, he has to eat around the rock slowing him down. When hes done, put the rest in.

Thirdly, you can try this, but its usally not to effecive. Buy a bigger bowl and put the food in it. This way there more neding to get it because its not all in a big pile in the bowl.

Lastly, if you go to a pet store they have balls there. There are these balls that you fill with treats, in your case food, the dogs has to roll it over or do something to it in order to get the food out. The ball dispenses in a couple pieces at a time. All you have to do is refill it when it is empty and he gets his meal through-out the day which is somewhat better for his stomach and he has to work for it.

Also, maybe because you have another dog is afraid that the other dog will eat his food when he is done. I would for a day or two feed your dogs in seperate rooms. This way there is no threat and may encourage slower eating. Make sure you praise him when he eats slower.

Hope I helped.|||give him wet dog food with reg food it worked for my puppy|||First of all separate them when their eating. Feed the pup in a crate and don't let him out( no matter how much he cries etc) til your Pom is done.

What kind of food are you feeding him? A lot of food are full of and are made up up of by products( read the ingredients). These will leave a dog with that hollow pit feeling. Try a good holistic grain free food. Halo, blue buffalo or google holistic dog food.

Get him checked by a vet. Make sure its nothing medical.

Next get a new bowl like a portion bow|||They make special bowls for dogs that eat too fast,or you could split his food into several small meals a day,fed by hand if you have to,or stuffed into a Kong so that he has to work to get the food.

Now, I fill his bowl in the morning and he eats it at night, just nibbling during the day. WEIRD! Since you have 2 dogs, maybe your dog has a fear that if he doesn't finish, your other dog will eat it all. Looking back on it, my dog was from a puppy rescue and ate with a whole bunch of other puppies. I really think it took him that long (to 16 months old) to get secure enough so he knew that no one was going to eat his food or take it away. Now when my grand dog (husky) comes over, he eats my boy's food but my boy just looks at me like...OK mom fill the bowl again. He is secure in knowing that he'll always have food. Just let your dog be and maybe he'll slow down on his own someday. Don't worry what others say. They said the same to me but knew I fed him cause they know how much I love him.|||I slowed our puppy's gorging at mealtime by feeding him multiple small portions. Give him a tablespoon or two at a time, when he finishes, praise him and feed him again until finished. It's time consuming, but, it worked for our lab.|||Maybe try giving his meal in shifts, like put some in his bowl, let him eat it, put some in his bowl let him eat it. IDK if it works, but maybe.

Hope that Helps!|||You can place a large, clean river rock or tin can in the middle of the bowl. He'll be forced to eat around it. Also, if you're using a normal food dish, try using one that's much bigger than necessary. That way, the food forms a very thin, wide layer. The dog can't dig into a big pile of food, you know? He has to pick up the kibble from every "corner" of the big dish.

You could also look into buying a "Brake Fast" food dish. (You may need to shop around a bit for the right size.)

http://www.amazon.com/Metal-Brake-Fast-D鈥?/a>|||Feed him his meal in sections. Put his bowl on the floor then but a small handful of his meal in the bowl. When he eats that then give him another handful. Another thing you can do is mix in some pineapple chunks. Most dogs do not like pineapple so he will try to pick around the pineapple and will slow him down. If he eats the pineapple it won't hurt him either. Don't mix it with wet food because the scent will make him want to eat faster and wet food can cause an upset stomach.|||Then feed bigger food as in large meaty chunks or complicated ones like a chicken quarter.

some people even feed partially frozen meals if their dog is a speed eater. It takes more work to eat.
